Meet an Illustrator: C. Coles Phillips

Coles Phillips is one of the great American illustrators of the 20s, he did several covers for Life Magazine and many other publications.

His specialty was the absence of contour and the blending of the main color with the background.

Look at the pictures below and see how sophisticate his designs were in design issue of his illustrations.

To make the contourn lines unnecessary and still keep them implied, like an optical illusion, he elegantly displayed a number of elements that make up the path where the line should be.

I love these skirts and dresses that he created merged into the background, it´s one of the most elegant, ingenious and elaborate things that an illustration has to offer.

Now and then I try to think a composition that work that way, so I can delete one or another element, but killing everything as he did in a so functionally form is very difficult.

Note that he dominated the painting techniques, light and shadow, contrast and everything else, but, by choice, he worked most of the paint with a flat color in favor of the design elements.

Anyway, enjoy these pieces there I selected and remember that in the composition of the painting and the drawing, the design also plays an important role.
