Meet this Illustrator: Allen Williams

Classical artists are always great references, but we must also look at the artists of our time, what they do, how they work, the new ideias they create, the illustration is not a static thing, it isn´t unchangeble, new techniques emerge, new concepts are invented. So it is worth to pay attention to everything.

This artist, Allen Williams today work with fantasy. As always, the question of the light is something flashy.

I separated some drawings and paintings because every step of the process is always important to see.

Meet this Illustrator: Mead Schaeffer

I'm a big fan of the golden age of American illustration, these artists who kept the integrity of the painting and who applied various design techniques - many created by themselves - stylizing lights, maximizing contrasts, cutting traces and leaving much to the interpretation of those are looking the image. They are artists of extreme elegance and amazing skill.

For you who want to know more artists from the Norman Rockwell´s generation, Mead Schaeffer is one of the great illustrators to study.

Pay particular attention to the illustration of The Count of Monte Cristo (the last on) and look how his clothes blend with shadow.

Meet this Illustrator: John Singer Sargent

Since I mentioned Sargent in this post, I think it´s only fair to better present him.

Sargent (1856 - 1925) is considered the best American portrait painter of his generation, it worth a note about his nationality. He is the son of American parents, but he was born in Italy, lived in Europe and died in England.

Sargent was famous for his oil paintings, but also painted many watercolors.

As always in painting, you will notice is the quality of contrast in his work, as it was usual, he worked many times with dark backgrounds, giving great emphasis on the illuminated faces.

One thing I like about Singer is that, even being a naturalist painter with great attention to detail, you notice a stylization in his work. In several paints you see the option for straight cuts and simplifications. In the colours he also held the hiperdetalhismo on the faces and solved simply and elegantly the clothes.

Sargent is a invaluable reference and evereybody who paints every now or then end up doing a reinterpretation of his work.

Below, there is some paintings that I find very beautiful, and two drawings (I like very much to see the drawing of the painters, they have very curious of choices of lines and masses).

It also has a photo of Sargent in his studio to give some idea of the scale of the paintings he did.

Look how he solve the clothes in a simple and elegant way.

Look the outline of this face, see the straight lines and beautifully stylized outlines?

Meet an Illustrator: C. Coles Phillips

Coles Phillips is one of the great American illustrators of the 20s, he did several covers for Life Magazine and many other publications.

His specialty was the absence of contour and the blending of the main color with the background.

Look at the pictures below and see how sophisticate his designs were in design issue of his illustrations.

To make the contourn lines unnecessary and still keep them implied, like an optical illusion, he elegantly displayed a number of elements that make up the path where the line should be.

I love these skirts and dresses that he created merged into the background, it´s one of the most elegant, ingenious and elaborate things that an illustration has to offer.

Now and then I try to think a composition that work that way, so I can delete one or another element, but killing everything as he did in a so functionally form is very difficult.

Note that he dominated the painting techniques, light and shadow, contrast and everything else, but, by choice, he worked most of the paint with a flat color in favor of the design elements.

Anyway, enjoy these pieces there I selected and remember that in the composition of the painting and the drawing, the design also plays an important role.
